Today, Justice Minister Nela Kuburović ceremonially opened the new facility of the Misdemeanour Court in Požarevac. On the occasion, she stressed that the Ministry of Justice was paying great attention to the advancement of infrastructural capacities of the courts and that new facilities required for other judicial organs would soon be opened. “This is the second court house entirely constructed new. Last year, a new building for the Misdemeanour Court in Raška was opened. In the next ten days, we expect the opening of a new facility for the Misdemeanour Court in Užice and by the end of the year, the Misdemeanour Court in Pančevo”, Kuburović said. She noted that the construction of the new facility of the Misdemeanour Court in Požarevac, which spread across some 700 square metres, lasted over five months although it had originally been estimated to last for eight.

Kuburović emphasised that the construction of the new facility was entirely funded from the State Budget, for which purpose over 55 million dinars had been allocated. She explained that the Misdemeanour Court in Požarevac – one of the most efficient courts in Serbia – had practically itself paid for the works seen as more than 55 million dinars in collected fines had been paid into the State Budget during the first five months of the construction.

Kuburović added that the misdemeanour courts would be playing a very important role in the application of the new Domestic Violence Prevention Act, the application of which had begun that day with already one urgent measure pronounced within the first few hours. “I am referring to the City of Pančevo, where a police officer has pronounced an urgent measure of removal from the household and the public prosecutor, based on a risk assessment, has proposed that the court extend the measure to thirty days – this proves that the Act is indeed being applied.”, Kuburović stressed, further commenting that the misdemeanour courts may pronounce a sixty-day sentence of imprisonment when an aggressor is in violation of the urgent measure.

The ceremonial opening of the new facility of the Misdemeanour Court in Požarevac was attended by the Požarevac Mayor Bane Spasojević, the President of the Appellate Misdemeanour Court Zoran Pašalić and the President of the Misdemeanour Court in Požarevac Slavica Petrović. They all thanked the Ministry of Justice for the construction and the refurbishment of the building of the Court which had been working in poor conditions for thirty years.
